Mkhaya Game Reserve, named after the Acacia nigrescens tree, was established in 1979 to save the Nguni cattle from extinction. It is proclaimed a Nature Reserve. Over the years, many other animal species including black rhino, roan, tsessebe, white rhino, and elephant have been introduced.
