Tōshō-gū shrines can be found all around Japan. Obviously, the most popular one is Tōshō-gū Shrine located in Nikkō. It is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Set in a beautiful cedar forest, it boasts myriad wood carvings, Yomei-mon Gate, Sakshita-mon Gate with famous Sleeping cat carving and many other remarkable gems of Japanese history; huge amounts of gold leaf were used to decorate the buildings.
