Akureyri is situated in north-east Iceland, on the longest fjord in the country, Eyjafjordur, and is surrounded by mountains reaching up to 5000 feet (1500 meters). Akureyri is about 25 miles (40 km) south of the Arctic Circle. With a population of about 17000, it is the second largest city after the Reykjavík capital. Referred to by Icelanders as the Capital of the North, Akureyri is the centre of culture, education and leisure activities in North Iceland; surprisingly active cultural life for such a small town. It's mostly an industrial town with shipping and dairy industries, and home to Akureyri University. A trip to nearby Lake Myvatn should also be on your list.
