Skogar open-air museum is conveniently located at the Ring Road, nearby the famous Skogafoss waterfall 95 miles (154 km) from Reykjavik, the capital. Skogar is the common name for two farms, a school, communications and folk museum that opened on 1 December 1949. The school and the museum were inaugurated in 1949; the school buildings are now used as a summer hotel. The church, an old country church replica, was consecrated by the Lutheran bishop in 1998.
